Qualifying for JEE Main is a big achievement and students who successfully compete shall be eligible for admission to NITs, IIITs, and some state government-funded engineering colleges.

However, if your dream is to secure admission in any of the IIT’s or Indian School of Mines (ISM), Dhanbad, you will have to crack the JEE advanced successfully. Therefore, if, you have been wondering how to prepare for the IIT Entrance examination, especially JEE advance here is a last minute preparation guide.

Design a Time Table for the next one Month

There is roughly 3 week of time left between the declaration of the JEE Main result & JEE Advanced.  The key to success is maximum optimization of the duration of time. Prepare a clear-cut timetable and try to stick to it to the best of your ability. Here are few tips that you should keep in mind when creating the timetable

• Start your day early – Since the duration between JEE Main & JEE Advanced is very short, sleeping at odd hours every day will rein havoc on your body clock on the day of the examination. Since, the examination will be conducted in two parts and will be conducted throughout the day you can’t be feeling exhausted and tired.

• Divide Time Carefully – You may have covered nearly 90% of the JEE advanced syllabus while preparing for JEE Main. However, do not be too complacent. Make sure that you divide your time equally between all 3 disciples – Math, Physics & Chemistry.

• Focus More on Revision – Do not pick up any new topic and focus more on the revision of already covered chapters and sections.

• Practice Previous Years Paper – If you are wondering how to prepare for the IIT entrance examination successfully, the practice of religiously solving practice or previous years question is very important. This will give you an insight into the kind of questions you will be asked in the main examination.

• Get Adequate Amount of Sleep – While you may be focused on reinforcement, solving practice paper and completing every aspect of the syllabus, do not ignore sleep. You need a minimum of 6 hours of sleep daily. Anything less than that will make you feel tired and sluggish.

Get a Thorough Understanding of the Question Pattern

While JEE Main is always conducted under a set pattern, the same cannot be said about JEE Advanced. Since its inception, the exam pattern and a total number of questions, etc. have undergone changes. Below is some generic information about the JEE Advanced question pattern.

• The exam is divided into Paper I & Paper II.  The duration of both papers is 3 hours with a gap of 2 hours between them.

• This year JEE advanced shall be conducted by IIT Madras. So, far the exam pattern has not been revealed by the Institute as yet. But, as per the last year’s examination pattern, Paper I & Paper II constituted of 54 questions, each paper carrying a total of 186 marks.

• Besides multiple choice questions, JEE Advanced also carry different question patterns like – Single Choice MCQs, Multiple Correct MCQs, Matrix Match Questions, and Integer Answer Type Question.

Stick to the NCERT Syllabus

Although JEE Advanced is perceived to be difficult than JEE Main, the syllabus of both examinations are similar. Therefore, stick to the NCERT syllabus and thoroughly revise and solve practice tests papers to the maximum.

Having stated that, you would have to adopt a slightly different approach when it comes to solving the JEE advanced question. The questions may be more application based, and it may slightly vary from the JEE Main. Negative marking is also part of JEE Advanced, and it can adversely affect your score, therefore, read each question carefully before you mark the final answer.

The top 220,000 examinees from JEE Main will be eligible to appear for JEE Advanced that is scheduled to be conducted on Sunday, 21st of May 2017.  To improve your chances to crack this coveted examination, stick to a planned and structured schedule.

Is there Negative Marking in NEET?

This is a very common concern of most students who are preparing for NEET entrance exam.  Becoming a doctor is a big responsibility, and one need to have a certain level of aptitude and inkling towards the disciple to tread on that career path.

To ensure that only the best and deserving candidates make it to the top medical colleges in the country, CBSE, the body that conducts NEET UG (Under Graduate) follows a very stringent evaluation process. Therefore, negative marking is an integral component of the assessment.

However, negative marking should by no means scare you. Instead, you should be well prepared and take all precautions to minimize mistakes in the main examination. To begin with, you should have a clear understanding of the exam pattern. Here is a quick glimpse of the NEET examination pattern and assessment details -

So, now that it’s clear that there is negative marking in NEET let’s begin our discussion on how to avoid it.  Negative marking can adversely affect your All India Ranking, and you may miss your chance to secure admission in the desired medical college. The key is to identify and understand why we make mistakes in the first place. Upon our discussion with several students, we narrowed down on the following 5 reasons that lead to negative marking -

1. Over Complacence – Sometimes being over complacent or confident can lead to mistakes. So, while it’s important to feel relaxed students are advised not to answer the question unless 100% sure of the answer.

2. Hurry to Finish – Every student agenda is to attempt maximum questions. However, in a hurry to finish or attempt the question, students end up making silly errors and mistakes.

3. Inaccurate Reading – This refers to the incomplete reading of the question. Due to incorrect reading, students mark the wrong answer. This scenario is particularly common for trick or indirect questions.

4.Guesswork - Sometimes students test their luck by indiscriminately marking the answers. Guesswork is not a good strategy, and you can end up losing a lot of marks.

5. Incorrect Marking – Questions that are incorrectly marked, or not shaded or attempted properly can cause students to lose marks.

Keeping in view the above points, you must be attentive and should adopt a smart approach when attempting the questions. Here’s what you need to do –

1.  Instead of focusing on answering more number of questions, pay attention to get maximum right answers.

2. Do not attempt those questions for which you are not sure of the answer.

3. Attempt those question or section first in which you are most confident. This will boost your confidence and will stop you from blindly marking the answers.

4. Never be in a hurry to complete the paper and read the question carefully before attempting the answer.

5. Refrain from erasing or changing the answer. Therefore, do not mark the question unless you are very sure.

Last Words

For a reliable assessment and scoring process, negative marking is an important part of any entrance examination. NEET is no exception to that rule. NEET is one of the most competitive medical entrance examinations in the country and those who successfully crack it are eligible to take admission for MBBS and BDS courses in both government and private medical colleges.  To secure your chances to secure the coveted seat answer the question responsibly and strategically.

How to study for NEET 2017 in the last one month before the exam? This is a very relevant question to ponder over. After all, whatever you learn or grasp during this time will stay fresh in your mind. But being buried in books for straight 15 to 18 hours in a day the right approach?

Probably not, several students have been gearing up for NEET 2017 for many months now.  The last one month is particularly challenging. By now many students may be feeling exhausted or is overwhelmed by the anxiety of the upcoming exam. If you have been feeling fatigued or worried latterly, let us remind you that you are not the only one.

Preparing for NEET which is one of the most difficult entrance exams in the country requires a high level of dedication and hard work.  The syllabus is vast, and the competition is stiff.  It’s only natural to be overwhelmed by all the hard work you have been putting in for the last several months. Now, on the last leg of your journey, it’s more about the battle of the nerves.

The key is to remain calm and composed and not let frivolous and unfounded anxieties ruin all the hard work. Keeping this view in mind, we bring to you the following coping and smart study strategies that will help you until the very end.

Do not divert from the NCERT Syllabus

This is a fairly known fact that the NEET syllabus is largely based on NCERT syllabus. Since the exam is conducted by CBSE, there are no two ways about that. However, in spite of that, students get perturbed by peers who are supposedly referring to advanced medical books to prepare for the exam.

Just stick to the guidance you have receiving by your mentors and do not take up any new study material.

Polish your Strengths

3 hours to answer 180 questions.  That leaves you just 1 minute per question. So, is it possible to answer all the questions within the stipulated time? We guess not. Therefore, instead of on focusing on completing or revising the entire syllabus, we suggest that you polish your strengths. Pick up those topics, sections or subjects that you are most confident about. Having a thorough grasp on the most important chapters with the NEET syllabus will strengthen your preparation, and you will be able to answer all the questions from those sections correctly.

Sleep Adequately

A well-rested mind and body will not just help you concentrate better, but will also help you fight anxiety and nervousness.  Studying for long hours at a stretch can be extremely stressful. When you sleep, the body repairs the muscle and energizes the brain. So do not compromise on sleep. Make sure that you sleep for at least 6 hours. Also, don’t hesitate to take power naps. 15 to 20 minutes of sleep can rejuvenate your mind and body instantly and prepare your brain to grasp better.

Revisit Previous Years Paper

Revisiting previous years question papers will not only abreast you with the examination pattern, but will also boost your confidence. Students often wonder what kind of questions is asked in the main examination. They have different notions and students perceive that the level of questions will be very tough.  Although NEET is a challenging entrance examination, the questions are asked within the syllabus. Therefore, if you can solve the previous year’s question, it will most certainly boost your confidence.

Eat Well

What you eat has an effect on your mood. At this juncture of your preparation, you certainly don’t want to feel tired or lethargic. Therefore, avoid junk food by all means and consume a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables. Eat meals that are prepared at home and make sure that drink enough water for hydration.

How to study for NEET 2017 in the final stages of the preparation will play a crucial part to determine the fate of the final examination. Stay relaxed, sooth your nerves and most importantly do not deviate from your mission. Just follow the five thumb rules discussed in this write-up, and you will do well.

This has driven many students towards the idea of self-study which is proving to be a productive method of learning. But, the inclination towards the practice of self-study doesn’t mean that students don’t need the help of expert mentors anymore. Especially when the exam date is approaching, the preparation strategy has to be such that anxiety finds no place in it. You might be preparing for NEET for nearly two years now and you have now entered the final stages of your preparation. While the initial stage of preparation was all about studying new concepts and chapters, the last few days until the entrance exam are more about maintaining the positive attitude. During the last leg of your preparation, you can’t afford to let the study go off track because of your ill health or lost confidence. These last minute preparation tips will not only help you develop command over most of the concepts and chapters, but also keep you in the right frame of mind to take NEET exam with confidence.

Rather than trying to take up new chapters covered under the NEET syllabus, focus more on revising all that you have learned till now. You are likely to forget the minute details of the chapters that you studied a few months back. So, you need set time for revision. Even if few concepts are left untouched, worry not! You would score more by revising what you have studied till now than by taking up something completely new just few days before the exam. During the revision time, try attempting as many chapter-related tests as possible to learn the application of different concepts well.

Maintain a positive attitude

‘NEET is going to be tougher this time’ or ‘there is a change in exam pattern” are some common rumors that float around before any competitive exam. Don’t be bogged down or disheartened by these rumors. Have a faith in your preparation and keep working hard. If you have prepared well then you just need to maintain a positive attitude and focus more on your physical and mental well-being. Have a talk with your mentor in case of any doubt.
